Bulgaria is one of the least explored destinations in Europe, but luckily, that is changing fast. There are flights to Bulgaria from every major airport in Europe. So, what’s special about Bulgaria? Why should you visit Bulgaria? Let’s find out!

It’s incredibly cheap - Cost of living in Bulgaria is surprisingly affordable. A dinner for two at a nice restaurant costs just 12 EURO. A bottle of wine of a reasonable quality costs 3 EURO. A large bottle of beer costs just 1 EURO! Same for a large bottle of Coca Cola. The stores are ridiculously cheap and you can easily buy four or five pairs of jeans for the price of one back home in the UK.

Shopska - You really have to try Shopska, which is Bulgaria’s national dish. Shopska is a simple salad composed of cucumbers, onions,   diced garden tomatoes, roasted pepper, and finally topped with a just a sprinkling of Bulgarian white brine cheese. It is then decorated with parsley, red wine vinegar and a dressing of sunflower oil and. Shopska is one of the most popular dishes in Bulgaria and is served at all restaurants in the country.

The People - The people of Bulgaria are nice, pleasant, attractive and well mannered. Bulgarians never raise their voice even in an argument. They love children and believe in forming a social connection with others in the vicinity. They are warm hearted, and always willing to help out if you get lost or are in distress and need help. You won’t find them obsessing over their cell phones as people tend to do back home. There’s a very charming, old fashioned air about them.

The Life - Life in Bulgaria is simple, laid back and fun. If you are used to the hustle and bustle of London, this might require a bit of getting used to. You may be interested to know that globalisation hasn’t reached Bulgaria as much as it has in the rest of the world. We don’t know what your views on globalisation are, but surely nobody likes to see a McDonald’s or a Starbucks on every street corner! In Bulgaria, you will mostly find local coffee shops and restaurants - small, cosy and very clean.

It’s Safe - Bulgaria is a very safe country. Incidents of crime are few and far between. Robberies and mugging are rare occurrences, murders and other serious crimes almost never happen. It’s safe to walk late in the night on the streets of Bulgaria, even for women. There’s no reason to be scared of anything at all.

Bulgarian Art and Cinema - Bulgarians are relatively unaffected by the vulgarity of Hollywood. There is something very old fashioned about the average Bulgarian appreciation for traditional Western music, theatre and dance, which is reminiscent of older, better times when people had a lot more individuality about them.

Roses - Bulgarian roses are exquisite - they are beautiful and highly romantic. Bulgaria exports roses and produces as much as 85% of the world’s rose oil.  Do visit the countryside if you are in Bulgaria in May or June, as that’s the time of the rose harvest.

Rakia - Rakia is Bulgaria’s national drink, made from fermented fruit. It consists of 40% to 80% alcohol content and is made from grapes, pears, plums, peaches, apricots, and mixed fruits. Rakia is usually served at the start of every meal along with Shopska - which we talked about earlier. Be sure to raise your glasses and say 'Nazdrave' (which means, “To your health!”) in traditional Bulgarian style to your host when having Rakia.

These are some of the reasons to visit Bulgaria. Other great things you can do in Bulgaria are, have a party on the sandy beaches of Sunny Beach, ski at Bansko or experience Bulgarian history at Nessebar.
