Tips for Getting Around Bulgaria

Did you book your flight to Sofia, Bulgaria from Dublin, Ireland as yet? We suggest you do so ASAP, and once you do, read up the tips given here on getting around Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is a very small country, and you can get to any place in Bulgaria within a single day, no matter from where you are starting. However, there are some distant places in Bulgaria, especially in the mountainous regions, which are not so easy to get to, and where the travel takes more than a day.

Most towns and cities in Bulgaria can be reached by bus or train. While there are many flights to Bulgaria from several important cities in Europe, within Bulgaria, there are only a couple of flight routes – from Sofia to Varna and from Sofia to Burgas.

Flight tickets in Bulgaria are much more expensive than bus or train tickets, but they take you from Sofia to Burgas or Varna within 45 minutes. So, if you have urgent business to attend to, you should consider taking a plane within Bulgaria from Sofia to either Varna or Burgas. However, make sure to book well in advance as the flights can often get overcrowded.

As for travelling by train, Bulgaria has a very well developed rail network. You can get to any city or town in Bulgaria very easily by train and the train journey usually takes a few hours of your time. This is a great way to get around Bulgaria, but make sure to book your seat well in advance.

The train compartments offer a choice between First class, Second class and Couchette. There isn’t much of a different between first and second class, but as far as possible, avoid the couchette class as it can get really crowded in there.

Don’t expect the trains in Bulgaria to be very fast. Travelling from Sofia to Varna would take 8 hours of your time. Make sure to reserve a berth in an overnight sleeper train to get there. You will find the timetables on the Bulgarian Railways site, but the problem is they don’t have any English version available. So this can be a drawback, unless you have a Bulgarian friend to translate the content for you.

Bus travel in Bulgaria is cheap and as fast as trains. Going by bus from Sofia to Varna will take less than 7 hours, but the roads are by no means world class, so you will probably find the trip to be a little uncomfortable. Buses generally have a TV and video in them, which blare out old Hollywood blockbusters such as Jurassic Park and Terminator – so you will be mildly entertained.

However, bus tickets cost more than train tickets. Travelling by bus in the winter can be a problem as sometime the roads get blocked by snowfall. So if you are travelling in Bulgaria during winter, it is always better to go by train.

You can always take a taxi for short distances within Bulgaria, however, be aware that there are some taxi drivers who overcharge foreigners. Always insist on paying according to the price list given by the government, which you will get at any bus station or railway station – no more and no less.
