Veliko Tarnovo is a beautiful town, and throbs with history and culture. There’s a lot to admire about this town, such as a lovely castle, the tranquil monasteries, the adventurous hiking trains and more.

If you want to be at some place quiet and idyllic, Veliko Tarnovo is where you should be. Nothing here is ever rushed, the lifestyle is decidedly laid back and the people are warm and friendly.

Things to Do and See in Veliko Tarnovo...

Take a Walk Along the Samovodska Charshia – The Samovodska Charshia is the most important street in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. You will find a number of antique shops, craft shops and more here. It is a very photogenic place famous for its great architecture, so remember to get your best camera.

 Go on a Hike – This is one of the best places to go hiking in Bulgaria. There are a number of natural trails just waiting to be explored. The Sveta Gora hill is a great place to start. Do ask for maps and directions at the local Tourist Information Centre.

Pay a Visit to the Boris Denev Art Gallery – The Boris Denev Art Gallery is a lovely little art gallery which has some of the best paintings, sculptures and drawings by Bulgarian artists which date back to the National Revival Period. You will also like the collection of artwork from contemporary Bulgarian artists.

Visit the Tsarevets Fortress –  The Tsarevets Fortress  is an ancient castle that was the main fortress of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185-1393. It is one of the top attractions in this part of Bulgaria and is definitely worth a visit. You can spend hours here, examining the historic buildings, churches and other wonder structures.

 Visit the Village of Arbanassi – Arbanassi is a small village outside Veliko Tarnovo. It’s a very quiet place where seemingly time stands still. You will have a lovely time here. Remember to have lunch at the nice little restaurant in Arbanassi, the food is absolutely delightful.

 Walk along the Gurko Street – The Gurko Street passes through the historic old district in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. You will find many lovely houses and buildings here that are over hundred years old.

Pray at the Church of Sv. Petar and Pavel – The Church of Sv. Petar and Pavel is an ancient church which has been fully functional since the 13th century. It still retains the pristine beauty that defined it when it was first built. You will find many lovely paintings here that date back to the medieval period.

Relax at the Shekerdzinitsa – Forget Starbucks, you should try out the Shekerdzinitsa, a lovely little cafe in the old market of Veliko Tarnovo. It has a great atmosphere and is generally full of happy people, chattering away. You will love the Turkish coffee served here as well – it’s just delightful.
