 Sveti Vlas (St. Vlas)

Sveti Vlas, also known as St. Vlas, is a beautiful, fast developing seaside resort located in the municipality of Nessebar in the Bourgas province on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. The town is set at the northern part of the bay at the foot of the Balkan Mountains and this position between the sea and the mountains makes for a great climate which is suitable for the treatment of various diseases.

St. Vlas is a beautiful coastal town with less that 4 thousand inhabitants, situated just 5 km north of Sunny Beach resort and 9 km from Nessebar. It is located in the busiest tourist area of the Black Sea and is only about 33 km from Bourgas Airport making for an excellent holiday destination. Flights to Bulgaria are popular in the summer months from UK and Ireland and Flights Bulgaria can help with finding some of the cheapest flights.

In recent years St. Vlas has been developed with new luxurious hotels and apartment complexes being built in the area. This is a top class resort with a pedestrianised area that offers great shops and cafes. The town has and some of the best bars and restaurants in the entire area and there are also lovely wine bars and fashionable nightclubs.

The latest addition to the area is the Marina Dinevi, developed by the Dinevi brothers, with many hotels and of course the fantastic marina itself. The marina has the capacity for 300 yachts and welcomes many yachts and small ships from all over the world. Tourists can rent or buy a yacht and a professional team of consultants are available giving a fabulous service.

There are three beaches measuring a total of 1.5 km and they offer many water and beach sports to keep all holiday makers active. While the marina was being built in 2007 the beach was expanded using the rocks and sand that were removed at the time. The marina attracts many of the wealthier people in Bulgaria and has its own restaurants, bars and clubs.

The area of St. Vlas dates back to the 2nd century AD, then founded by the Thracians and the Greeks. It only changed its name to Sveti Vlas in the 14th century as a tribute to their patron saint Saint Blaise who had a monastery dedicated to him in the region. The area eventually became a climatic seaside resort in 1963 as the beaches face directly south and is perfect for family holidays.

Sunny Beach is the largest resort in the area and is to north of the town while the town of Nessebar is at the southern end. Sunny Beach has many shopping centres with designer ware, cafes, bars and restaurants and is a very lively resort. Nessebar is an ancient town with many churches and museums. Both are accessible by bus or taxi as well as boat taxis.

While staying in St. Vlas visitors who would like to keep active can book hiking tours and mountain walks in the area. There are also interesting places to visit such as The Church of St. Blaise, a lovely church with stained glass windows and beautiful art on the walls. You can light a candle and visit the little shop to buy some keepsakes. There is also The Church of Afanasiy the Great, an old conventional building that does not have any domes or obvious luxury but has a lot of really old icons and church books.

St. Vlas is a wonderful, top resort that welcomes families, couples and groups of friends. Bulgarian flights have dropped in price over the past few years and cheap flights to Bulgaria can be acquired from all over the UK and Ireland.
