As you look prepare for your trip to Bulgaria and look for the best flights to Bulgaria from Ireland, let’s quickly talk about what NOT to do in Bulgaria, or the mistakes many travellers make.

Mistake #1: Thinking Sofia is Bulgaria – Sure, Sofia is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and there is a lot to do and see in Sofia, but there is a lot more to Bulgaria than Sofia. Spend a few days in Sofia when you get there. Visit the night clubs, see the museums, and experience the culture. But remember, Sofia is not all that there is to Bulgaria. Did you know for example that 80 percent of Bulgaria’s population lives in the most beautiful, pristine villages? Rural tourism is big in Bulgaria. Bulgarian villages such as Dolen, Turiya, Ravnogor, and Trigrad are well kept, neat and tidy and always worth a visit.

Mistake #2: Expecting Everything to Be Cheap – Yes, Bulgaria has a very low cost of living and everybody knows about this. But that doesn’t mean that you should try to get everything for free. That’s not the way to behave at all. Bulgaria is cheap, but not so cheap, you will still have to spend some money there. Bulgaria is cheaper than London, Dublin or Paris, but it is still more expensive than most emerging economies such as India or Thailand. So don’t expect to buy an entire designer wardrobe with a €30 bill in Bulgaria!

Mistake #3: Underestimating the Hotels in Bulgaria – Really, hotels in Bulgaria are pretty much up the standards you would expect. Many tourists are under the impression that just because Bulgaria was under communism for over 40 years, the hotels here of a low quality. Wrong! Family-owned small hotels treat guests very well and offer first class homemade food. They make sure that your stay in Bulgaria is incident-free and enjoyable.

Mistake #4 Misbehaving at Sunny Beach – Sunny Beach is one of the most popular beach resorts in the world. It is where you will find a lot of young people having a great time and partying the night away. But there is a risk of getting too drunk and misbehaving at Sunny Beach. The Bulgarian police don’t take kindly to this and any sort of misbehaviour or disrespect shown to the authorities is not tolerated. Yes, you should let yourself go, just like everybody else at Sunny Beach, but make sure that you don’t do anything illegal or take substances that are banned or illegal. Also, you may want to visit some of the places that not far from Sunny Beach, such as Burgas. Burgas has a great nightlife and has great beaches too.

Mistake #5: Having a Little Too Much to Drink – This follows up from the previous point. Alcohol doesn’t cost much in Bulgaria. But make sure that you are within your limits and don’t end up having too many cheap beers. Also, stay away from beer that is too cheap. There are shady local businesses that sell counterfeit drinks and a lot of people have been known to get sick because of them. So, drink responsibly and get your liquor from decent-looking and reputable bars.

Mistake #6: Being in a Hurry – Everything in Bulgaria moves at a glacial pace. Even the trains here are hilariously slow. The railway system in Bulgaria is ancient and created for an earlier era, when speed wasn’t a high priority. So don’t make the mistake of rushing through anything in Bulgaria. Instead, enjoy the splendid sights and natural sceneries during your journey. Bulgaria’s stunning natural beauty demands that you should experience the wonders of the country at a leisurely pace.
