As you book your flight to Sofia Bulgaria from Dublin Ireland, you should know there is a lot more to Bulgaria than just Sofia and a couple of other cities. Bulgaria has a very diverse landscape dotted with stunning natural sceneries, historical sites, unspoiled beaches and more.

The best way to discover Bulgaria is to go on a road trip that takes you across the country. The first thing to do is to rent a car, so that you are in charge of your own travel schedule. There are many car rentals in Sofia or Bourgas where you can book a car for hire online.

Okay, have you booked your car rental already? Then follow the tips for driving in Bulgaria given here.

Tip #1: Always drive on the right

Driving in Bulgaria is on the right side of the road. If you want to overtake, you should do so from the left hand side.

Tip #2: Never use a mobile phone when driving.

You should never use a mobile phone when driving in Bulgaria. You can use a hands free system to communicate on the mobile phone if you like.

Tip #3: Use the car horn sparingly

You are not allowed to use the car horn as you like in Bulgaria. You should only use it to avoid accidents and use it as sparingly as possible.

Tip #4: Documents needed to drive

You need a valid driver’s license, car insurance, a registration card and an annual technical inspection card to drive in Bulgaria.

You will also need to have the following equipment (not all of them are compulsory) – a first aid kit, a spare tyre, a hazard triangle, a reflective jacket and a fire extinguisher.

Tip #5: Drive with headlights on.

Bulgaria is one of the few countries where it is mandatory to drive the car with the headlights on during the day as well as through the night for the entire year.

Tip #6: Stay within the speed limits.

When driving in Bulgaria you should stay within the following speed limits:

ü Inside the city limits: 50km/h (30 mph)

ü Outside cities: 90km/h (55mph)

ü On motorways: 140 km/h (75mph)

You can get fined for over-speeding on Bulgarian roads. If you drive at a speed of within 10 km/h above what’s permissible, you will be fined 20 Leva. If you are caught driving at a speed that’s higher than that, you will be levied much higher fines. Most of the roads in cities have speed cameras, so keep in mind that you will be watched.

 Tip #7: Know your destination

Write down the Bulgarian name of the place you want to visit on a piece of paper. So, when you ask directions from someone on the road, they will be able to point you in the right way even if they don’t know English. Also, when driving on Bulgarian roads, you will need to have a map and GPS with you, because most of the road signs are in Cyrillic.
