Bulgaria Is Changing And That’s a Good Thing!

Bulgaria is changing and changing fast. It is no longer the old communist outpost that it was for over four decades. Today Bulgaria is a free market democracy and a member of the European Union.

Bulgaria is well connected to all major cities in Europe. There are, for example, cheap flights to Sofia, Bulgaria from Dublin, Berlin and London. Yes, Bulgaria is still the poorest country to be a member of the European Union, but things are changing pretty fast.

The government is totally committed to improving the standard of living of a vast majority of Bulgarians and a many measures have been taken in this regard. For one, Bulgarians enjoy more freedom today than they did at any point in their 2,000 year old history.

Bach when Bulgaria was a communist country, political dissidents, rebellious poets, writers and artists were punished by the state, with lifetime in prison or hard labour.

Nobody can be incarcerated in Bulgaria today for stating an opinion or opposing the ruling government. Bulgaria is a very tolerant country that treasures free speech. People can speak freely, criticise or argue, without fear of any sort.

Yes, Bulgaria is changing, but still not as fast as its citizens want it to.  Over 2 million Bulgarians are forced to migrate to Western Europe and to the US in search of jobs as there are just not enough opportunities to earn a decent income in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is still not a developed country. But things are changing, as we said. The GDP per capita in Bulgaria was $7502 in 2015, which puts it comfortably in the “mid-income” territory, alongside the likes of Turkey and Mexico. Not bad at all, for a country that was ravaged by shortages of essential items for years under communism.

Bulgarians are proud to be a part of the European Union, during a time when Euro-scepticism is at a high across the continent. But they also have very high expectations from the EU, and believe EU to have the solution to all problems.

Many Bulgarians expect the European Union to intervene and get rid of the political corruption, unemployment and even manage the economy. That’s not going to happen. The European Union can only do so much. But when no help comes through, this leads to resentment against the EU over time, which is unfortunate.

On the positive side, Bulgarians are taking charge of their lives by starting their own businesses. The infrastructure in the country is now up to European standards. The roads in Bulgaria are very good, the airports clean, and the trains run on time, although the railway infrastructure is still very old.

Bulgaria is fast emerging as a tourist hub. There’s a lot of interest in Bulgaria as it is seen as one of Europe’s greatest secrets. There’s a real desire to explore Bulgaria.

Also, people are fascinated by Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast, which is home to internationally famous beach resorts such as Sunny Beach. Mountain resorts such as Bansko are popular too. Bansko has emerged as a top winter destination and has world class skiing facilities.

Certainly, Bulgaria is a country on the move, and that’s very good to see. Bulgarians, in general, are very optimistic about their future and the direction in which their country is heading.
