#1: Bulgarians are very proud of their history

Stories of Bulgaria’s glorious past are told by every grandmother in the country. Bulgarians love talking about their great ancestors, their battles and wars and the great sacrifices made by them. They love talking about how they fought for their freedom from the Ottoman Empire and how the Bulgarian culture survived and thrived despite tremendous odds.

#2: Bulgarians spend a lot of money on clothes, mobile phones, etc.

Bulgarians don’t hesitate to spend money on the latest clothes and fashion accessories. They don’t mind spending 700 Euros on an iPhone although that’s well over their budget. Similarly, they spend on the latest electronics, home appliances, PlayStation, home theatre and so on. 

#3: Bulgarians hate politicians – all of them

Bulgarians consider politicians to be the worst specimen on the planet. They love talking about the next election, but openly express their distaste for politics and politicians. Yes, Bulgarians are absolutely crazy about football. Almost everyone here is mad about the game and follows the fortunes of their local club as well as that of the national team religiously. The great Bulgarian footballer, Hristo Stoichkov is a legend here. Nobody has forgotten his extraordinary performance in the 1994 World Cup. Bulgaria’s current football team does not have anyone half as good as Stoichkov, unfortunately.

Bulgarians don’t trust rich and successful people. They believe every rich person is hiding something and is involved in money laundering or some scam. This goes back to the nation’s communist past when wealth was frowned upon. All Bulgarians want to be rich someday, and yet are suspicious of the rich and the loaded.

There’s nothing that an average Bulgarian wouldn’t know about, or claim to. Bulgarians are smooth conversationalists and they can talk about absolutely anything – science, sports, politics, movies, culture, art, etc. You name it!

Bulgarians have an almost obsessive relationship with roses. Giving someone a rose in Bulgaria is a very romantic gesture. But it’s not just about romance. Bulgaria is one of the biggest producers of rose oil, rose water, rose oil creams and several other cosmetic products made from roses, which are exported to China, USA, UK, Germany and several other countries.
